Marine Wing Support Squadron 273, known as the Sweathogs, was commissioned on June 13, 1986, at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, and falls under Marine Air Control Group 28 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron's assigned mission is to provide all essential aviation ground support to a designated fixed-wing component of a Marine Aviation Combat Element, including expeditionary airfield services, aircraft and ground refueling, engineering, and motor transport. Within that structure, the Aviation Operations Support company houses the Fuels Platoon, the Marines responsible for bulk fuel operations and the training of fuel technicians who keep aircraft ready to fly. During a single deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2012, the squadron delivered over nine million gallons of fuel to more than 25,000 aircraft and 2,500 ground vehicles, earning the American Petroleum Institute Tactical Unit of the Year award. Each MWSS is also designed to operate Forward Arming and Refueling Points, pushing fuel capability forward so aircraft can sustain operations far from main bases. The Fuels Platoon patch captures that unglamorous, essential work in durable PVC format, suited for gear panels, flight bags, shadow boxes, and unit-history displays.
