Kilo Company Witch Doctors — Marine Air Control Squadron 4
Marine Air Control Squadron 4 (MACS-4) is a United States Marine Corps aviation command and control unit providing aerial surveillance, ground-controlled interception, and air traffic control for the III Marine Expeditionary Force. Originally formed during World War II as Air Warning Squadron 13 on 5 May 1944 at MCAS Cherry Point, the squadron has served as the eyes and ears of Marine aviation across the Pacific for over eight decades.
MACS-4's most notable combat distinction came during the Vietnam War, when the squadron became the first unit to operationally employ the Marine Tactical Data System (MTDS). Arriving at Monkey Mountain near Da Nang in June 1967, MACS-4 began operations on 6 July 1967 from a site co-located with HAWK missile batteries and the USAF's Panama Air Control Facility, providing positive radar control across I Corps Tactical Zone. By the time MACS-4 made its last tactical transmission on 13 January 1971, the squadron had controlled or assisted an astonishing 472,146 aircraft during its time in Vietnam—a testament to the unit's critical role in managing the complex airspace of the war.
Reactivated at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa in June 1971, MACS-4 has remained forward-deployed under Marine Air Control Group 18 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing ever since. Elements of the squadron supported Operation Enduring Freedom from 2002 to 2004. In December 2020, MACS-4 underwent a major restructuring under Force Design 2030, reorganizing its subordinate units from detachments to companies—including the activation of an Air Defense Company—and introducing the advanced AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR radar system.
Perfect For: Veterans of MACS-4 Kilo Company, Marine air controllers and radar operators, Marines of MACG-18 and 1st MAW, MTDS technicians and operators, and collectors of Marine command-and-control aviation insignia.
