The US military roundel traces its origins to May 1917, when the United States adopted its first unified aeronautical national insignia shortly after entering World War I. The design evolved through both World Wars, with the red center circle removed in 1942 to prevent confusion with Japanese markings, and white side bars added in 1943 to improve shape recognition at distance. By January 1947, the familiar red-striped bars bisecting the white bars were introduced, locking in the red, white, and blue color scheme that reflects the American flag and remains the standard today.
