Established on 2 May 2013 at Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado, California, HSM-35 made immediate history as the first composite expeditionary helicopter squadron in the United States Navy to operate both manned and unmanned aircraft within a single unit. The Magicians callsign was inherited from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 35, which served the fleet from 1973 until its decommissioning in 1992, giving the modern squadron a lineage that stretches back more than five decades. Flying the MH-60R Seahawk alongside the MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned aerial vehicle, HSM-35 wrote the doctrine for manned-unmanned teaming that now shapes naval rotary-wing aviation across the fleet. Operating from the decks of littoral combat ships and surface combatants, the Magicians deliver maritime strike, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, and ISR capabilities that extend a ship's reach far beyond the horizon. During their first deployment aboard USS Fort Worth, a single HSM-35 detachment covered more than 2,500 square nautical miles in the Java Sea, demonstrating the real-world impact of their composite mission model. The surf shoulder format ties the design to the Southern California coastal culture surrounding NAS North Island, making this patch a natural fit for both uniform wear and collection displays.
