HSC-8 traces its roots to a squadron established in June 1956 at Naval Auxiliary Air Station Ream Field in Imperial Beach, California, flying combat rescue missions in Vietnam and supporting the Apollo space program before the unit was reestablished in November 1969. On 28 September 2007, the squadron was redesignated Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Eight and received its first MH-60S Seahawk with the armed helicopter kit, marking a shift from antisubmarine work to the full-spectrum sea combat role the Eightballers hold today. Based at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, HSC-8 is attached to Carrier Air Wing Eleven and deploys aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt in support of Carrier Strike Group Nine. The squadron's mission set spans vertical replenishment, logistics, combat search and rescue, anti-surface warfare, and special operations forces support, and its operational record includes counter-piracy operations and sustained WESTPAC and Fifth Fleet deployments.
