This 1982–1985 squadron patch commemorates a specific era in the Dragons' history when the squadron operated the CH-46 Sea Knight medium-lift helicopter from Futenma during the Cold War, maintaining forward-deployed readiness as part of III Marine Expeditionary Force.
HMM-265 was activated on 30 November 1962 and has been a cornerstone of Marine aviation in the Western Pacific for decades. During the 1982–1985 period, the Dragons operated in an era of heightened Cold War tensions, conducting training exercises and maintaining operational readiness across the Pacific theater. The squadron's Futenma-based CH-46 Sea Knights provided the medium-lift assault support capability essential to III MEF's ability to respond to crises anywhere from the Korean Peninsula to Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.
The Dragons have since transitioned from the CH-46E Sea Knight to the MV-22B Osprey, redesignating as VMM-265, and continue to serve as one of the Marine Corps' forward-deployed tiltrotor squadrons in Okinawa. The squadron has deployed in support of numerous operations and exercises, and has participated in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations across the Pacific Rim.
