Official HMLA-367 Scarface Flightline Qual Patches — Earning Your Spot on the Scarface Flight Line

You don't just walk onto the Scarface flight line. You qualify.

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 (HMLA-367) — 'Scarface' — is one of the most combat-decorated helicopter squadrons in the United States Marine Corps, with a lineage stretching back to World War II and a reputation forged in the fires of Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The squadron was originally activated in December 1943 as Marine Observation Squadron 351 at Quantico, Virginia, and participated in combat operations on Peleliu and Okinawa. After a 17-year deactivation, the Marine Corps reactivated VMO-3 at Camp Pendleton on August 1, 1966, and deployed it to Hue/Phu Bai in the Republic of Vietnam in December 1966, flying UH-1E Hueys. The squadron's legendary callsign 'Scarface' was first used by Major Bill Murphy while on TAD, and was officially adopted when Marine squadrons in-country changed call signs during the summer of 1967. In Vietnam, Scarface grew to 25 aircraft, flew top-secret reconnaissance missions in support of MACV-SOG, and became the first Marine aviation squadron to employ the AH-1G Cobra attack helicopter. After Vietnam, the squadron participated in the evacuation of Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees during Operations Eagle Pull, Talon Vise, and Frequent Wind in 1975. When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Scarface was chosen as the light attack component for MAG-70 and arrived in Al Jabail, Saudi Arabia, on August 29, 1990, as the first operational U.S. Marine light attack helicopter squadron in theater. HMLA-367 recorded the first Iraqi tank kill by an AH-1W Super Cobra during the Battle of Al Elbow in southwestern Kuwait on January 30, 1991, and accrued confirmed kills of 48 tanks, 24 armored personnel carriers, and 23 other military vehicles — more than any other operational combat squadron during Desert Storm. The squadron deployed to Iraq three times in four years in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying in support of the 1st Marine Division during the Battle of Fallujah, and then became the first squadron to deploy the UH-1Y 'Yankee' Huey in combat in Afghanistan. Scarface was decommissioned in April 2022 as part of Force Design 2030 and reactivated on December 16, 2022, at MCAS Camp Pendleton under MAG-39, 3rd MAW. This flightline qualification patch represents earning your place on the Scarface flight deck — one of the most demanding in Marine aviation.

Perfect For: HMLA-367 Scarface Marines past and present, AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom pilots and crew chiefs, legacy AH-1W Super Cobra and UH-1E Huey veterans, MAG-39 and 3rd MAW personnel, and anyone who has qualified on the Scarface flight line.
