HMH-772 traces its roots to April 15, 1958, when it was activated at the Marine Air Reserve Training Command in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, as part of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Over the following decades the squadron evolved through multiple redesignations before earning its current identity as Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 772, operating the CH-53E Super Stallion out of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, under MAG-49 and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing. The Hustlers carry a list of firsts that sets them apart from any other reserve aviation unit: they were the first reserve squadron to receive the special operations capable designator, and the first unit to airlift the Marine Corps M777A2 lightweight howitzer in combat during operations in Afghanistan. The squadron has deployed in support of Operations Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom, and continues to integrate seamlessly with active duty forces for assault support, aircraft recovery, and humanitarian assistance missions.
