Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466 was commissioned on 30 November 1984 as the Marine Corps' third CH-53E Super Stallion squadron, assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 16 and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at MCAS Miramar, California. In its first seven months the Wolfpack logged over 1,100 flight hours, carried 1,000 passengers, and lifted 175,000 pounds of cargo, setting the pace for a combat-proven career that would span decades. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, HMH-466 became the first CH-53E squadron to deploy to Saudi Arabia, where the Wolfpack recovered downed aircraft, executed the first Night Vision Goggle troop insertion in the theater, and sustained heavy lift operations through the ground phase of Desert Storm without a single loss of personnel or aircraft. The squadron went on to serve in Operation Restore Hope in Somalia, multiple Western Pacific deployments to Okinawa, and sustained combat tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. By 1995 the Wolfpack had become the first CH-53E squadron to surpass 30,000 mishap-free flight hours.
