Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 461 (HMH-461) "Ironhorse" is a United States Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopter squadron based at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. This Republic flag patch combines the Ironhorse identity with the American flag — a patriotic design that represents the squadron's dedication to the nation and the heavy-lift mission that supports Marines in combat.
HMH-461 is assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 29 (MAG-29) and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, providing the heavy-lift capability that enables Marine ground forces to maneuver, resupply, and sustain operations in the most challenging environments. The CH-53E Super Stallion can lift 36,000 pounds externally, making it capable of transporting armored vehicles, artillery, ammunition, and other outsized cargo that no other helicopter in the American military can carry. The Ironhorse name reflects the raw power and reliability of both the aircraft and the Marines who fly and maintain it. HMH-461 has deployed extensively in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as humanitarian missions and MEU deployments.
