Official VMM-163 Ridge Runners St. Patrick's Day Patch — Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 Embroidered Patch
Ridge Runners go green — VMM-163 brings Irish luck to seven decades of Marine aviation heritage.
Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 (VMM-163), known historically as the "Ridge Runners" and officially as the "Evil Eyes" since 2015, is a United States Marine Corps tiltrotor squadron operating MV-22B Ospreys from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California. Assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 16 (MAG-16) under the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, VMM-163 provides assault support transport of combat troops, supplies, and equipment during expeditionary, joint, and combined operations worldwide.
The squadron's storied history stretches back to December 1, 1951, when it was commissioned as HMR-163. The "Ridge Runners" nickname was earned during typhoon rescue and relief operations in the mountainous terrain surrounding Hanshin, Japan, following Typhoon Tess in September 1953. From Vietnam — where Larry Burrows' legendary LIFE magazine photo-essay "One Ride with Yankee Papa 13" brought the war home to American living rooms — to Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, where the Evil Eyes executed the longest amphibious assault in American military history, VMM-163 has been at the forefront of Marine Corps aviation for over seven decades. The squadron's iconic "Evil Eyes" painted on their aircraft originated in 1965 when the intelligence officer suggested the design to unsettle enemy forces in South Vietnam. This St. Patrick's Day edition celebrates the Ridge Runners' legacy in festive green.
Perfect For: VMM-163 Ridge Runners and Evil Eyes active-duty members and veterans, MV-22B Osprey crews, MAG-16 and 3rd MAW personnel, MCAS Miramar Marines, Vietnam-era Marine helicopter veterans, holiday-themed military patch collectors, and Marine aviation history enthusiasts.
Ridge Runners — green for the day, Evil Eyes forever.
