The Douglas A-1 Skyraider first flew on March 18, 1945, and entered fleet service the following year, beginning a combat career that stretched from Korea through the final years of the Vietnam War. Designed to combine dive-bombing and torpedo missions in a single carrier-based airframe, the Skyraider carried up to 8,000 pounds of ordnance — more than a World War II B-17 — on fourteen hardpoints driven by a thundering Wright R-3350 radial engine. Pilots and crews nicknamed it the Spad, a nod to the legendary French fighter of World War I, and when the aircraft flew combat search and rescue cover it earned the call sign Sandy. Sandy drivers orbited low and slow over hostile territory, suppressing enemy fire while Jolly Green Giant helicopters recovered downed aviators. The Skyraider outlasted jet-age skeptics across two wars, logged MiG kills over North Vietnam, and produced at least two Medal of Honor actions. A total of 3,180 were built by Douglas Aircraft before production closed in 1957, and the type remained in U.S. service until 1973. Its long loiter time, rugged construction, and massive payload made it the close air support standard that directly shaped the design philosophy behind the A-10 Warthog decades later.
