The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing was commissioned on November 10, 1942, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, and has grown into the largest and most capable Marine aviation command on the west coast. Headquartered at MCAS Miramar in San Diego, California, 3rd MAW serves as the aviation combat element for I Marine Expeditionary Force, providing combat-ready expeditionary aviation forces capable of short-notice worldwide deployment to Marine Air-Ground Task Force, fleet, and unified commanders. Within that command structure, the Communication Strategy and Operations office — known throughout the Wing as COMMSTRAT — advises the commanding general and shapes how the Wing's story reaches the public, the media, and the broader Marine Corps community. COMMSTRAT professionals produce photographic, video, digital, and print products that support the commander's communication strategy while enhancing situational awareness and decision-making across the Wing. Their work spans garrison operations, major exercises, deployments, and crisis response, making the COMMSTRAT patch a meaningful emblem for the Marines and civilians who keep the Wing's narrative accurate, timely, and mission-focused.
