2nd Battalion, 11th Marines (2/11) is an artillery battalion assigned to the 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. Battery D (Delta) is one of the battalion's firing batteries, operating the M777A2 155mm lightweight towed howitzer — the Marine Corps' primary artillery piece for providing indirect fire support to the ground combat element. The "Regiment's Best" and "Patriot" designations reflect Battery D's pride in their unit's performance and their commitment to the artillery mission.
The M777A2 howitzer that Battery D operates is a 155mm artillery piece that weighs approximately 9,800 pounds — roughly half the weight of the M198 it replaced — making it transportable by the MV-22 Osprey and CH-53E Super Stallion. The M777A2's digital fire control system provides enhanced accuracy and faster response times, allowing Battery D's cannoneers to deliver precision fire support at ranges exceeding 18 miles with rocket-assisted projectiles. The battery's Marines serve as cannoneer section chiefs, fire direction center operators, forward observers, and communications specialists — all working together to put steel on target.
