The 178th Assault Support Helicopter Company was activated at Fort Benning in September 1965 and arrived in Vietnam in March 1967, eventually making Chu Lai their home base in I Corps. Known throughout the theater as the Box Cars, a callsign drawn from the double-six dice painted on the aft of their CH-47 Chinooks, the unit flew medium-lift missions that kept infantry battalions, artillery batteries, and special operations forces supplied and mobile across some of the most demanding terrain of the war. The 178th was the first Chinook company in Vietnam to become fully operational with the upgraded B-model Chinook, and the first to sling-lift a complete 155mm howitzer weighing more than 12,500 pounds. Over the course of the war, the Box Cars accumulated more than 40,000 flight hours and supported a remarkable list of units including the 101st Airborne Division, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, and the Australian Task Force. Their record of tonnage, sorties, and hours in the air reflected a crew culture built on reliability, precision, and the understanding that the infantry on the ground depended on every load they delivered.
