The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, activated in 1979 at Camp Pendleton, California, is one of seven MEUs in the United States Marine Corps and operates as part of I Marine Expeditionary Force. With roughly 2,200 personnel organized as a Marine Air Ground Task Force, the 11th MEU deploys by sea, air, and land to conduct amphibious assaults, crisis response, humanitarian assistance, and special operations. Certified as Special Operations Capable in 1992, the unit has served across the Western Pacific, Arabian Gulf, Horn of Africa, and beyond, earning a Presidential Unit Citation for its role in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.
