Officially Licensed USMC VMF-311 Tomcats John Glenn Patch — Marine Fighter Squadron 311 Historical Embroidered Patch

The squadron that launched an American hero into history.

Marine Fighter Squadron 311 (VMF-311) "Tomcats" holds a special place in American history as the squadron where John Glenn — future Mercury astronaut, first American to orbit the Earth, and United States Senator — flew combat missions during the Korean War. This patch honors that remarkable heritage, connecting VMF-311's proud combat legacy with one of the most celebrated figures in American space exploration.

VMF-311 was established during World War II and saw extensive combat in the Pacific Theater. During the Korean War, the Tomcats flew close air support missions from bases in Korea, with then-Major John Glenn flying 63 combat missions in F9F Panthers, earning five Distinguished Flying Crosses. Glenn's fearless flying and aggressive combat style earned him the nickname "MiG Mad Marine" among his squadronmates. From the skies over Korea with VMF-311 to the Mercury capsule Friendship 7 orbiting the Earth in 1962, Glenn exemplified the courage and determination that defined the Tomcats.

The squadron evolved through VMA-311 and eventually became today's VMFA-311, now operating the F-35C Lightning II. This patch bridges generations of Tomcat excellence.

Perfect For: VMF-311/VMFA-311 Tomcats veterans, Korean War aviation enthusiasts, John Glenn admirers, Marine fighter squadron historians, and space exploration crossover collectors.

From Korea's skies to the stars — VMF-311 Tomcats.
