The Sentinels of MWSS-171 stand guard over Marine aviation operations in the Western Pacific, providing the ground support infrastructure that keeps MCAS Iwakuni and forward deployed locations operational. This officially licensed patch represents the Marines who build, fuel, and defend the bases that Marine air power depends on.
MWSS-171 provides expeditionary airfield operations, engineer support, bulk fuel distribution, motor transport, communications, and ground defense for Marine aviation units at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan, and deployed locations throughout the Indo-Pacific. The Sentinels support MAG-12 and other 1st MAW units, ensuring that America's forward-deployed Marine aviation forces always have the ground infrastructure needed to respond to any contingency in the Western Pacific.
