MWSG-17 was the command element responsible for coordinating all ground support for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. From expeditionary airfield construction to bulk fuel operations, from base defense to motor transport, MWSG-17 directed the Marines who built and maintained the infrastructure that Marine aviation depends on.
Marine Wing Support Group 17 served as the higher headquarters for the Marine Wing Support Squadrons assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The group coordinated engineer support, expeditionary airfield construction and maintenance, bulk fuel operations, motor transport, communications, and local security for all aviation installations and expeditionary operating locations under 2nd MAW's control. MWSG-17's Marines were the unseen foundation that enabled Marine air power to project from the East Coast to anywhere in the world.
