The Marine Corps deployed multiple rotations to Iraq throughout Operation Iraqi Freedom, with each deployment bringing new challenges and hard-won lessons. The initial invasion showcased Marine combined arms maneuver warfare at its finest, while subsequent deployments in Anbar Province demanded a different kind of fighting — patience, cultural understanding, and the ability to build relationships with Iraqi tribal leaders while hunting insurgents. The Anbar Awakening, which saw Sunni tribes ally with Marines against Al-Qaeda in Iraq, became one of the war's most significant turning points. Marines adapted, improvised, and overcame in an environment that demanded everything they had.
