MASS-3 received its current designation on 15 February 1954 and has served as the aviation command and control backbone of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force ever since. Based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton under Marine Air Control Group 38 and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, the squadron provides Direct Air Support Center and DASC-Airborne capabilities that coordinate aircraft operating in direct support of MAGTF operations across every threat environment. The unit's combat record spans decades and continents. During Vietnam, MASS-3 Air Support Radar Teams directed more than 121,000 short tons of ordnance across 56,753 targets. In Desert Storm, the squadron's DASC logged 4,450 operational hours controlling over 7,300 fixed-wing and 3,000 rotary-wing missions while processing hundreds of tactical air requests and MEDEVACs. MASS-3 went on to support the 1st Marine Division from Kuwait to Tikrit during Operation Iraqi Freedom and deployed to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, in 2010 for Operation Enduring Freedom. Today the squadron continues to validate distributed air control concepts through exercises like Steel Knight, establishing Multi-Function Air Operations Centers that link ground elements with aviation assets in high-end scenarios.
