T-28 Trojan Driver Patch — Embroidered Patch
Where the Wings Began
Every naval aviator's journey started somewhere, and for a generation of Marine and Navy pilots, it started in the cockpit of the T-28 Trojan. This patch honors the "Trojan Drivers" — the student pilots who learned the fundamentals of military aviation in this rugged, powerful trainer, and the instructors who taught them.
The North American T-28 Trojan served as the primary basic trainer for naval aviation from the 1950s through the 1980s. The T-28B and T-28C variants, powered by a 1,425-horsepower Wright Cyclone engine, gave student pilots their first taste of a high-performance aircraft with retractable gear, constant-speed propeller, and enough power to teach them respect for the machine. Thousands of Marine and Navy pilots earned their wings after mastering the Trojan at training bases across the country. The T-28 also saw combat service in Southeast Asia, where modified versions flew counterinsurgency missions. But for most aviators, the Trojan is remembered as the aircraft that separated those who could fly from those who couldn't — the great equalizer of primary flight training.
