Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) is the most famous helicopter squadron in the United States military, best known as the operator of Marine One — the presidential helicopter. This "Phrog Phlyers" patch commemorates the CH-46 Sea Knight crews who served at HMX-1 during the Phrog era, supporting presidential and VIP transport operations with the precision and security standards that define the "Nighthawks" of HMX-1.
HMX-1 was established on December 1, 1947, at Marine Corps Air Station Quantico, Virginia, originally tasked with developing helicopter assault tactics for the Marine Corps. The squadron took on the presidential support mission in 1957, and since then HMX-1 has been responsible for the safe transport of the President, Vice President, Cabinet members, and foreign heads of state. While the VH-3D Sea King and VH-60N White Hawk handle the Marine One mission, HMX-1 has operated a variety of support aircraft including the CH-46 Sea Knight. Serving at HMX-1 requires the highest security clearances and the most demanding standards of airmanship, maintenance, and professionalism in military aviation.
