HMR(L)-261 — light helicopter transport from the early days of Marine rotary-wing aviation.
HMR(L)-261 was a Marine helicopter transport squadron (light) that operated during the formative period of Marine Corps helicopter aviation. The light transport squadrons flew smaller utility helicopters that complemented the medium transport HMR squadrons, providing reconnaissance, observation, command and control, and light utility transport. HMR(L)-261's lineage eventually contributed to the modern HMLA (Marine Light Attack Helicopter) community.
