Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466, the Wolfpack, was commissioned on 30 November 1984 as Marine Aircraft Group 16's second CH-53E Super Stallion squadron. From its earliest months the unit set a relentless pace, flying over a thousand hours and lifting more than 175,000 pounds of cargo before its first year was complete. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, the Wolfpack became the first CH-53E squadron to deploy to Saudi Arabia, executing night vision goggle troop insertions and recovering downed aircraft during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The squadron went on to earn the distinction of being the first heavy lift unit to support combat operations in two simultaneous theaters of war, with detachments reaching both Iraq and Afghanistan. That record of firsts, sustained across decades of Western Pacific deployments, MEU support, and humanitarian operations, gives the Wolfpack insignia a weight that goes well beyond a standard squadron patch.
