The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal recognizes service members who supported operations against terrorism following September 11, 2001. This patch represents an entire generation of warriors who volunteered to serve knowing that the nation was at war and that their service would likely include deployment to combat zones.
The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal was established by Executive Order 13289 on March 12, 2003, and is awarded to members of the Armed Forces who served on active duty or Reserve duty after September 11, 2001, in support of operations to combat terrorism. The GWOT Service Medal is distinct from the GWOT Expeditionary Medal, which recognizes actual deployment to designated combat theaters. The service medal recognizes the broader contribution of all service members who maintained the military's readiness and operational capability during the nation's longest sustained period of combat operations. Every member of the post-9/11 military contributed to the fight, whether deployed overseas or maintaining readiness at home.
