Sweden's naval infantry tradition dates back centuries to the age of the Swedish Empire, when Swedish Marines fought in the Great Northern War against Russia. The modern Amfibiekåren (Amphibious Corps) was established during the Cold War to defend Sweden's extensive coastline and archipelago — over 220,000 islands — against potential Soviet amphibious assault. Swedish Marines specialize in littoral warfare, operating from fast combat boats among the rocky islands and narrow channels of the Swedish and Finnish archipelagos. Today, as a member of NATO since 2024, the Swedish Amphibious Corps works closely with allied marines and has contributed to international operations, including peacekeeping missions and maritime security operations.
