The term "Flying Leathernecks" has been synonymous with Marine aviation since the earliest days of the Corps' air wing. Marine aviators accompanied expeditionary forces to Latin America and Asia in the 1920s, flew from Navy carriers through the 1930s, and became legends at Guadalcanal, where pilots like Joe Foss and Pappy Boyington turned Henderson Field into a fortress in the sky. From the frozen ridges of Korea to the jungles of Vietnam, from Desert Storm to the mountains of Afghanistan, Marine aviation has served as the aerial sword of the expeditionary force. The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum — the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to USMC aviation — preserves this history for future generations.
