The E-130J Phoenix II is the U.S. Navy's next-generation airborne nuclear command, control, and communications platform, built to replace the aging E-6B Mercury fleet in the TACAMO mission. Derived from the C-130J-30 Super Hercules, the Phoenix II will provide survivable, reliable, and endurable communications between the National Command Authority and ballistic missile submarines. The name itself honors a legacy that stretches back to 1963, when the EC-130Q first carried the TACAMO mission before the E-6B took over in 1989. PMA-271 and Strategic Communications Wing 1 officially designated the aircraft E-130J Phoenix II in August 2025, with SCW-1 squadrons at Tinker Air Force Base, including the Ironmen of VQ-3, the Shadows of VQ-4, and the Roughnecks of VQ-7, set to operate the platform. A Fleet Introduction Team chest patch marks the people doing the hard early work of standing up a new weapons system, mastering advanced mission systems, very low frequency communications, and integrated command and control before the aircraft ever reaches operational service. That role is specific, demanding, and historically significant, making this patch a meaningful piece of early program history.
