Camp Hansen—one of the Marine Corps' premier training installations on Okinawa, where Marines of III MEF maintain combat readiness in the heart of the Indo-Pacific.
Camp Hansen is a United States Marine Corps installation located in the central part of Okinawa, Japan, in the municipality of Kin. One of several Marine Corps bases on Okinawa, Camp Hansen serves as a major training and operational base for III Marine Expeditionary Force (III MEF) and Marine Forces Japan (MARFOR Japan). The camp houses infantry, artillery, and support units that maintain a constant state of readiness for crisis response, contingency operations, and combined training with the Japan Self-Defense Forces and other allied nations across the Indo-Pacific region.
Camp Hansen is named after Private Dale M. Hansen, a Marine who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Okinawa on 7 May 1945. Private Hansen single-handedly destroyed an enemy pillbox, attacked a mortar position, and charged a Japanese gun emplacement armed with a bazooka, an act of valor that cost him his life at age 22. The camp's name serves as a daily reminder to every Marine who serves there of the sacrifice and valor that earned the Marine Corps its reputation on Okinawa.
Okinawa has been home to Marine forces since the battle that raged across the island in April–June 1945, and today approximately 20,000 Marines are stationed across multiple installations on the island. Camp Hansen's jungle training areas, live-fire ranges, and urban warfare training facilities provide the realistic training environments that III MEF's Marines need to maintain proficiency in the full spectrum of military operations across the diverse terrain of the Indo-Pacific theater.
Perfect For: Camp Hansen Marines and veterans, III MEF and MARFOR Japan personnel, Okinawa-stationed service members and families, Marine Corps infantry and support units who have trained at Hansen, and military base patch collectors.
