USS New Orleans (LPH-11) was commissioned in 1968 as an Iwo Jima-class amphibious assault helicopter carrier. The ship deployed Marine helicopter squadrons and embarked Marines throughout the Cold War and beyond, participating in exercises and operations across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. New Orleans served as an Apollo program recovery ship and was decommissioned in 1997.
