USS Princeton (LPH-5) began life as the Essex-class carrier CV-37 before being converted to an amphibious assault helicopter carrier. The ship served in the Korean War as a carrier and later in the Vietnam War as an LPH, transporting Marine helicopter squadrons and embarked Marines. Princeton also served as a recovery ship for early space missions, including Gemini and Apollo capsule recoveries.
