USS Okinawa (LPH-3) was commissioned in 1962 as an amphibious assault helicopter carrier of the Iwo Jima class. The ship deployed Marine helicopter squadrons and embarked Marines throughout the Cold War, participating in operations across the Pacific, including Vietnam. Okinawa also served as a recovery ship for multiple Apollo space missions and participated in numerous humanitarian operations before her decommissioning in 1992.
