Iraq Campaign Medal Patch — Embroidered Patch
Service in the Cradle of Civilization
The Iraq Campaign Medal recognizes service in the Iraq Theater of Operations — a campaign that spanned from the initial invasion in March 2003 through the final withdrawal and subsequent advisory missions. This patch represents every service member who served in Iraq during one of the most complex military operations in American history.
The Iraq Campaign Medal was established by Executive Order 13363 on November 29, 2004, to recognize members of the United States Armed Forces who served in Iraq and surrounding areas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and subsequent operations. The medal bears campaign stars for participation in designated phases including the Liberation of Iraq, Transition of Iraq, Iraqi Governance, National Resolution, Iraqi Surge, and Iraqi Sovereignty. The Iraq War challenged the American military with high-intensity combat, urban warfare, counterinsurgency operations, and the complexities of nation-building in a society fractured by sectarian violence.
