The Vietnam Service Medal was established on July 8, 1965, and was awarded to members of the Armed Forces who served in Vietnam and contiguous waters or airspace between July 4, 1965, and March 28, 1973. The medal could include campaign stars for participation in up to 17 designated campaigns. For Marines, the Vietnam Service Medal represents service in I Corps — the five northern provinces of South Vietnam where the Marine Corps conducted its operations. Over 2.7 million Americans served in-country, and the Vietnam Service Medal is the common thread that connects them all, regardless of branch, rank, or assignment.
