The Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal was established on March 1, 1919, and has been awarded for participation in a wide range of operations that fall outside the scope of specific campaign medals. These include peacekeeping missions, embassy reinforcements, humanitarian assistance operations, non-combatant evacuations, and other contingency operations that characterize the Marine Corps' expeditionary nature. The medal has been awarded for operations in locations ranging from the Caribbean and Central America to the Middle East and Africa. For the Marines who receive it, the Expeditionary Medal represents the reality of being America's 911 force — always ready, always deploying, always answering the call.
