The Silver Star is the nation's third-highest military decoration for valor in combat — awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. This patch represents one of the most prestigious recognitions a service member can receive, marking an individual act of bravery that went above and beyond what duty required.
The Silver Star was established by an Act of Congress on August 7, 1942, though it was retroactively authorized for gallantry in combat dating back to World War I. The award recognizes distinguished gallantry in action — a standard that demands exceptional courage under fire. Recipients have included Marines who charged enemy positions under withering fire, pilots who pressed attacks against overwhelming defenses, and Corpsmen who exposed themselves to save wounded comrades. The Silver Star ranks just below the Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross, and Air Force Cross, and just above the Legion of Merit. To wear the Silver Star is to be recognized by the nation for extraordinary bravery.
