Aviation Life Support Systems represent the full chain of specialized clothing and equipment designed to permit aircrew personnel to function within their flight environment, safely escape a disabled aircraft, survive after egress, and support search and rescue efforts. The Navy Aircrew Survival Equipmentman rating, known by the designator PR, traces its roots to 1942 when the original Parachute Rigger rating was established to meet World War II survival requirements. The title was updated to Aircrew Survival Equipmentman in 1965 to reflect the expanded scope of the work. Today, PR Sailors and Marine Corps Flight Equipment technicians with MOS 6060 maintain parachutes, life rafts, helmets, oxygen systems, flotation devices, g-suits, anti-exposure suits, and survival kits across every Navy and Marine Corps aircraft type. Their work happens before the flight, behind the scenes, and under the pressure of knowing that a missed inspection or a failed seam can cost a life.
