The Air Medal is one of the most widely recognized military decorations in the United States Armed Forces, established by Executive Order 9158, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on 11 May 1942. Created during one of the most difficult periods of the air war in World War II, the medal was awarded retroactive to 8 September 1939 to any member of the Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight. During World War II alone, the Air Medal was awarded over one million times, with criteria varying widely by theater — bomber crews in Europe received the medal for five sorties while Pacific theater requirements were considerably higher. The medal's design features a bronze compass rose charged with an eagle carrying two lightning flashes in its talons, suspended by a fleur-de-lis. The ribbon bears the original colors of the Army Air Corps: ultramarine blue flanked by golden orange stripes. The Navy and Marine Corps award two types: "Individual" for singular meritorious acts and "Strike/Flight" for participation in sustained aerial operations. The medal has been awarded across every major American conflict from World War II through Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror, recognizing the courage and skill of aviators and aircrew who risk their lives in the skies.
