Pistol Expert is the top tier of handgun qualification in the Marine Corps — reserved for the Marines who can put rounds exactly where they need to go with the service pistol. This patch represents the shooters who achieved the highest marksmanship standard with the sidearm, demonstrating precision and consistency under the pressure of qualification.
The Marine Corps pistol qualification course tests accuracy, speed, and composure at combat-relevant distances. The Expert qualification demands scores that reflect genuine mastery of the handgun — proper grip, sight alignment, trigger control, and the ability to deliver accurate fire rapidly. While the rifle is the primary weapon of every Marine, the pistol serves as the secondary weapon for officers, staff NCOs, and Marines in certain military occupational specialties. Pistol Expert qualification carries particular prestige because the handgun is inherently more difficult to shoot accurately than the rifle, requiring a higher level of fundamental marksmanship skill to master.
