Marksman is the baseline — the minimum acceptable standard for a United States Marine on the rifle range. This patch represents the Marines who met the qualification standard and proved they can put rounds on target when it counts. In the Marine Corps, qualifying with the rifle is not optional. It's who you are.
The Marksman qualification requires a minimum score of 250 on the Marine Corps rifle qualification course, demonstrating the fundamental ability to engage targets accurately with the service rifle. While it's the lowest of the three qualification tiers, Marksman is not a participation trophy — it requires genuine skill with the weapon, proper application of the fundamentals of marksmanship, and the ability to perform under the pressure of qualification day. Every Marine, from infantry riflemen to aviators to cooks, must qualify with the rifle annually, reinforcing the Corps' foundational belief that every Marine is a rifleman first. The Marksman badge may be the starting point, but it represents a real accomplishment.
