Sharpshooter is the middle ground — better than Marksman, not quite Expert. This patch represents the Marines who demonstrated solid, consistent rifle skills on the qualification course, hitting targets with enough accuracy to earn the respect of the range coaches but not quite reaching the top tier. For many Marines, Sharpshooter is the stepping stone to Expert on the next qualification.
The Sharpshooter qualification requires a score between 280 and 304 on the Marine Corps rifle qualification course. It represents a level of marksmanship that exceeds the minimum standard and demonstrates genuine proficiency with the service rifle. Sharpshooter Marines have proven they can consistently hit targets at 200, 300, and 500 yards under the pressure of qualification conditions. Many career Marines have cycled between Sharpshooter and Expert across multiple qualifications, depending on conditions, preparation, and that one string of fire at the 500-yard line that makes or breaks the score.
