Every Marine is a rifleman, and the Expert qualification is the standard every Marine strives for on the rifle range. This patch represents the Marines who achieved the highest marksmanship qualification — those who put rounds on target with the precision and consistency that defines expert-level shooting.
The Marine Corps rifle qualification course is one of the most demanding marksmanship programs in the American military. Marines fire the service rifle from distances of 200, 300, and 500 yards from standing, kneeling, sitting, and prone positions, engaging targets under time constraints that test both accuracy and composure. The Expert qualification requires a score of 305 or higher out of a possible 350, demanding consistent hits across all distances and positions. Marine marksmanship training dates back to the Corps' founding philosophy that every Marine is fundamentally a rifleman, regardless of MOS. The Expert badge — and this patch — represents the pinnacle of that tradition.
