While the rifle companies earned headlines at Belleau Wood, the Marines of Supply Company, 5th Marines, ensured that ammunition, food, and equipment reached the front lines through shattered roads, gas-filled ravines, and continuous German artillery barrages. This patch carries the Indianhead insignia as worn by the logisticians who kept the fighting Fifth in the fight.
Supply Company, 5th Marines, was responsible for the critical lifeline of logistics that sustained the regiment through some of the bloodiest fighting of World War I. Operating behind the front lines but well within range of German artillery and gas attacks, supply Marines ran ammunition and rations forward through devastated terrain, evacuated wounded, and maintained the equipment that kept the 5th Marines combat-effective. Without these Marines, the regiment's rifle and machine gun companies could not have sustained the twenty-day battle at Belleau Wood or the subsequent offensives at Soissons, Blanc Mont, and the Meuse-Argonne.
