Officially Licensed USMC 3rd Marine Amphibious Force Patch — Embroidered Patch
Vietnam's Senior Marine Command
III Marine Amphibious Force was the highest-level Marine command in Vietnam — responsible for all Marine Corps operations in the five northern provinces of South Vietnam. This patch represents the Marines who served under the III MAF banner during one of the most sustained and intense combat campaigns in Marine Corps history.
III Marine Amphibious Force was established in May 1965 to command all Marine forces in Vietnam, eventually growing to include the 1st and 3rd Marine Divisions, the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, and Force Logistic Command. At its peak, III MAF controlled over 85,000 Marines and sailors operating across I Corps Tactical Zone. The force was responsible for operations that ranged from major set-piece battles at Hue City and Khe Sanh to the Combined Action Program that embedded Marines in Vietnamese villages. III MAF's area of operations included some of the most heavily contested terrain in Vietnam, from the DMZ in the north to the densely populated coastal lowlands and the mountainous jungle interior.
