The 283rd Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) conducted medevac operations during the Vietnam War alongside the 254th Medical Detachment. Flying UH-1 Hueys into hostile landing zones, the 283rd's Dust Off crews evacuated wounded soldiers under fire, often in conditions where no other aircraft would venture. This patch preserves the unit identity of one of Vietnam's dedicated air ambulance detachments.
