Established on 20 August 1942 at Bolling Field, District of Columbia, the 12th Air Force was activated to serve as the Army Air Forces component of Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa. After staging through England, the command deployed to Algeria and spent the remainder of World War II conducting tactical air operations across the Mediterranean Theater, supporting campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. During the Cold War the command served within United States Air Forces in Europe and later Tactical Air Command, with its units seeing action in the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm. Redesignated Twelfth Air Force (Air Forces Southern) in 2008, the command is now headquartered at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, and serves as the air component to United States Southern Command, conducting security cooperation and delivering air, space, and cyberspace capabilities across Latin America and the Caribbean. That unbroken arc from Operation Torch to modern hemispheric defense gives the 12th Air Force patch a lineage that spans combat theaters, command structures, and generations of Airmen.
