The Eleventh Air Force traces its lineage to the Alaskan Air Force, established on 28 December 1941 and redesignated 11 Air Force on 5 February 1942. When Japan bombed Dutch Harbor and seized Attu and Kiska in the western Aleutians, the Eleventh Air Force answered with a sustained air offensive flown from forward fields on Umnak, Adak, and Amchitka. The Aleutian campaign remains the only World War II campaign fought on North American soil, and the first land-based bombing mission against the Japanese home islands launched from Attu on 10 July 1943. After the Cold War, the Alaskan Air Command was redesignated the 11th Air Force on 9 August 1990 and assigned under Pacific Air Forces. Today the command serves as the air component for Alaskan Command and the Alaskan NORAD Region, providing combat-ready forces and continuous aerospace warning around the clock. The patch design reflects that identity directly: a winged star in flight on a blue sky background with the numeral eleven, where the star is a stylized North Star pointing to the unit's Alaskan home and its broad defense mission. Blue and yellow carry the Air Force colors, with blue representing the sky and yellow standing for the excellence demanded of every airman who has served under this command.
