The 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) traces its heritage to July 9, 1942, and the activation of the 1st Special Service Force, a joint American and Canadian organization that earned a Distinguished Unit Citation and the French Croix de Guerre with Silver Gilt Star during World War II. The Group as it is known today was activated on June 19, 1952, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, making it the nation's first Special Forces unit. Its original Cold War mission was to plan and execute guerrilla operations behind Soviet lines in Eastern Europe, drawing early volunteers from OSS, Ranger, and Airborne veterans. The Group later deployed to Bad Tolz, Germany, before relocating its headquarters to Fort Carson, Colorado, while maintaining a forward battalion presence in Stuttgart. Today, 10th SFG operates across the EUCOM and AFRICOM areas of responsibility, executing unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, direct action, special reconnaissance, and counterterrorism missions.
