VMO-6 deployed to Korea during the Korean War, where Marine observation helicopters were used in combat for the first time on a significant scale. VMO-6's HO3S-1 and later HTL helicopters flew observation, medical evacuation, and wire-laying missions across the Korean peninsula, often under fire. The squadron's medevac missions are credited with saving hundreds of Marine lives by rapidly evacuating wounded from the front lines to mobile Army surgical hospitals. VMO-6's Korean War service fundamentally proved that helicopters belonged on the battlefield.
